The Piggy Bank
In western Europe, during the middle ages, household utensils were often made of dense orange clay known as pygg and people used to save their coins in pygg jars.
By the eighteenth century, other material was being used in the making of the jars and people no longer knew what pygg was. They thought it was a misspelling of ‘pig’ and in England, pygg jars began to be called as pig jars or pig banks. Gradually, potters too, began to cast the banks in the shape of a pig. That is how we got our piggy banks.
Poor John Duns
The word dunce is derived from the name of John Duns Scotus, who was considered one of the most brilliant philosophers of the 14th centuary. After his death, reformers rejected his teachings. Those who supported his ideas were dubbed ‘Dunsers.’ By the end of the 16th century, the word ‘dunce’ had acquired its current meaning of someone who is stupid or dull.
